Volunteer trip Fiji 2017: week one

So long, and thanks for all the glasses!

Every volunteer trip is supported by so many others behind the scenes, and the VOSO/Lions Fiji 2017 trip was no exception. Donated glasses poured in thanks to all the workplaces and individuals who have helped us out in the lead up. In total, we received nearly 500 pairs of glasses, including close to 400 pairs of optical frames, and over 100 pairs of sunglasses.

And then on Friday (the day before Ravi was due to fly to Fiji for the trip), he finalised his packing, polished off his jandals, reviewed his travel documents....

... And discovered his passport was due to expire the following week. What followed was a truly amazing level of service from the passport office as they managed to process him a new passport in a matter of hours. Thank you NZ Passport Office!

So after a somewhat stressful, touch-and-go afternoon, it was probably quite a relief to check in all the glasses & equipment, and sit down on the plane for a few hours.

Once in Fiji, there was just one night in Nadi before it was onto another plane and off to Labasa, on the island of Vanua Levu, which was the base of operations for the next 2 weeks. We will share more stories of the trip soon, so stay in touch.
